I have been diapering my children for almost six years now. I started with disposables on my daughter but switched to cloth diapers full time when she was around three months old. With my son, I began using cloth but started using disposables part time during our eight months of travels back and forth from the New York City area. He is now in disposables full time because he is so thin and petite that I was having trouble getting a secure fit with cloth. With my third baby due sometime next month, I have both cloth and disposable diapers on hand. While cloth diapering can save a lot of money over the years, I have also discovered some ways in which to save money on disposables.
Amazon Subscribe-and-Save
As an avid customer on Amazon Prime, I began my search for the least expensive disposable diapers on Amazon Subscribe-and-Save. I already have a number of items that I purchase each month on subscription. By subscribing to five or more products each month, I automatically receive a 5% discount on many of my items. I also receive a 20% discount on diapers. For example, the size 4 package of Cuties Baby Diapers that my son wore over the summer came to $21.48 for 124 diapers, which was $0.17 per diaper. When I found that the size 4 Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers came to $27.51 or $0.14 per diaper for a 192-count package, I switched my subscription. I also recently purchased a 276-count box of size 1 Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers, which came to $33.91 or $0.12 per diaper. You do have to plan ahead because Subscribe-and-Save items come once a month and be prepared to switch brands, but the savings is totally worth the effort and wait.
Forget Brand Loyalty
I have always shopped around for the best prices on the products that my family and I use. I am not a brand loyalist, switching around depending on price. For the most part, I cannot tell the difference between name brands and off brands. I have also found little difference between various name brands. (The only exception is Cheerios. I have yet to find an off brand that tastes quite like regular Cheerios.) Thus, I often switch my purchases based on price rather than the name on the packaging. For example, when I started using disposables on my son, I picked up a 200-count box of size 4 Member’s Mark Comfort Care diapers at Sam’s Club for $38.94 or $0.19 per diaper. When I found the Cuties Baby Diapers on Amazon for less, I switched to that brand. When I again found the Huggies Snug & Dry Diapers for even less, I switched again. Thus, to save the most on disposable diapers, be prepared to jump around from brand to brand while shopping for the best price.
Adding coupons into your diaper shopping experience can save you even more money. I have used paper coupons in-store to save money. I especially love combining sales with coupons. For example, back in August, I found Huggies and Pampers diapers on sale at Kroger for $7.99 and and $7.59. At the sale pricing, the Huggies came to $0.18 per diaper and the Pampers at $0.27. However, I also had a digital $2 off coupon for each brand on my Kroger app and card. By combining the sales with the coupons, I purchased the Huggies for $0.14 per diaper and the Pampers for $0.19. Plus I earned points on my Kroger card that I can use to save on gas and points on my Amazon credit card that I can use for Amazon purchases! Amazon also offers coupons on diapers. For example, I found a $2 off coupon on the first delivery of the 104-count newborn size of Pampers Baby Dry Diapers, making the final price per diaper only $0.17 each.
Shop Closeout
I finally have found disposable diapers at super low prices by shopping closeout items. Kroger is especially fond at marking items down to closeout prices. Back in August again while combining sales and coupons, I noticed the 37-count packages of size 2 of Check This Out brand diapers on closeout for just $3.99 per package. At that pricing, the final cost per diaper came to only $0.11 cents each. I put all nine remaining packages in my cart, bringing home a total of 333 diapers at a super low price!
